Long-time boxing expert Pat Barry, left, is shown with Las Vegan Diego Magdaleno, who will go after the WBO Super Featherweight championship Saturday in Macau.

From the time he was five years of age, Diego Magdaleno has been a focused young man with only one goal in mind – to become a World Champion.

Now, at the age of 26, this Las Vegas based boxer will have the opportunity to achieve his ultimate goal; on April 6 in Macau, China Magdaleno will challenge Roman Rocky Martinez for the World Boxing Organization Super Featherweight championship of the world.

“This is going to be the fight of my life,” said Magdaleno, who turned professional in 2007 after having a stellar amateur boxing career where he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials twice and becoming a 2007 USA National Champion.

Scheduled to be shown on HBO2, the fight is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Macau time; and 2 p.m. ET/PT. Interestingly, both the Puerto Rican based champion and Magdaleno, the challenger, are facing strong challenges as it relates to time zones and travel to make this fight happen. Magdaleno along with his trainers Augie Sanchez and Pat Barry will leave Las Vegas March 26 for the championship fight.

“I’m ready right now,” said Magdaleno, who recognizes that Martinez, who has a record of 26-1-2, with 16 knockouts, will be a very tough opponent. “We will both have the same challenges”.

Magdaleno, whose strength is his ability to adapt to another boxer’s style, said Martinez is a very tough fighter.

“He is rugged and he comes after you,” said Magdaleno. “He comes to fight and we’re ready for that.”

While Magdaleno could train anywhere, it is Barry’s Boxing Center located at 2664 South Highland Ave. south of Sahara Avenue in Las Vegas Nevada that he calls his second home.

“I was nine years old when I first started with Barry’s Boxing,” he said. “We have a very good working relationship and everything just flows. I cannot imagine going anywhere else.

“I continue to box because I’m trying to be the role model for the kids here at Barry’s, my fans, and for my two younger brothers, my three sisters and my mom and dad. If I win, my family wins; and so do Dawn and Pat Barry. We’re one big family.”

The fight will be held in a very large venue; there will be three world championship fights on the Top Rank promoted card (headed by the legendary promoter Bob Arum.)”, and it will be broadcast by Tim Ryan and Larry Merchant along with two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman.

This is a historic moment for not only Diego but for Top Rank promotions and Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum as this will be the first time that world championship boxing has been promoted in China. This may be the most viewed professional boxing card in the history of boxing due to the 400 million homes in China who are anticipated to tune in along with the fans who will be watching on HBO2.

Further information regarding Magdaleno can be found by visiting; or by calling Barry’s Boxing Center at 702-368-BOXN (2696).
